about

Florescence is the fourth solo album from UK synthesist, Loula Yorke.

"Practice made perfect" The Wire

"Proper flower power" Electronic Sound

"Wonderfully fresh and boingy" The Quietus

"An expansive exploration of synthetic shapes and changing landforms" Foxy Digitalis

Tracks from this album have been selected for broadcast by Tom Ravenscroft (BBCR6), Late Junction with Jennifer Lucy Allan (BBCR3), and Night Tracks with Hannah Peel (BBCR6).

Over 50 minutes, Florescence is an exploration of music as mass: time moves in circles, unfolding and crashing back into itself, causing shifting perspectives of meter and pattern; creating a dense dark forest or an elevated heartbeat. The album is full of fizzy, trance-inducing wonkiness, from contrapuntal experiments to geometric acid waves: one moment could be a nod to the breakcore that soundtracked Loula’s formative years, another could be to Xenakis or Bach.

Loula says of the release: “I work with generative cycles: repetition, iteration, growth, release; improvising with algorithms, pushing waveforms with voltage, manipulating and modulating to conjure tones and textures. I use music to process the emotions arising from mothering and daughtering: the passing-through of big life stages which trigger ghosts to appear from my own experiences of growing up. I started learning synthesis after I had my two girls, after we all moved to this house on The Green – all the tracks are named after wildflowers – everything feeds back in and the cycles repeat.”
