about

During October 2020 Loula Yorke got to work in her studio developing sonic ideas she's recently been performing live, most notably for Ipswich Sound City and TUSK Festival.

The result is a 4-track EP, ‘Crowd Control Vol 2’: a meditation on human contact set against the hustle and bustle of crowded spaces sourced from around the world. Tracks contain layers of barely intelligible words that seem to become song in the process; bursts of sculpted white noise clash with bursts of sculpted crowd noise; synthesised melodies range from saccharine to jaunty, melancholy to powerful.

The work uses techniques Yorke has been gradually establishing as staples of her modular synthesis practice over the past 2 years: experiments with drone, noise, algorithmic generation and granular processing, firing off random triggers to create coincidence and unexpected juxtaposition. But there are new elements too: the qualities of her own voice are revealed in a recording for the first time.

The EP opens with the pacy, wonky noise pop of 'Rush Hour'. Spoken words are frozen in time to resemble sung notes and a saccharine synth line is tempered by disturbing lyrics floating by on the ether. 'Eat Out To Help Out' is all percussive, glassy, resonance paired with rumbling sub frequencies; playing with freezing and pitch shifting the familiar ‘tink’ of cutlery hitting crockery in a busy café. 'Our Streets' fizzes with tight sizzles and big kicks; frequency modulation and granular processing come together to evoke something alien and futuristic, while anti-roads protestors chant in the streets. The final track on the EP is 'High Streets', a solid swirl of 1980s Roland synth sounds punctuated by the rhythm of her voice caught in repetition, cut through with snatches of shoppers’ conversation and the shuffle and bustle of moving feet.

EP out on 4 December 2020

Selected press:
"East Anglian sound artist Loula Yorke brings a much-needed sense of wit and abandon to the all-too-often sterile world of modular synth techno. Which is not to say she’s not serious about what she does: These four tracks, whether they pound ominously (“Our Streets”), shuffle and twirl (“Rush Hour”), or meander and crackle without beats, are all full of smart, provocative political conscience. Samples of street protests and news broadcasts are folded into the sonic thought processes in a way that captures the atmosphere of one of the strangest years in world history."
